Department 56’s origins date back to 1976 with Bachman’s, a leading retail florist in Minneapolis.  A large and successful enterprise, Bachman’s used an extensive numbering system for its different departments.  Its wholesale gift imports division was “Department 56.”  That year, Bachman’s introduced 6 lighted ceramic cottages in what became known as the “Original Snow Village.”  Serious collectors today might pay more than $1,000.00 for one of the original cottages.  Three years later, the original 6 designs were retired, and 12 new designs were introduced, along with the first accessory pieces.  Collectors’ fascination continues to grow - Department 56 collector clubs are located from Hawaii to Alaska, from California to Maryland!
